Protecting your computer doesn't have to be an ongoing expense these days. There is more than enough quality protection available for free. That's right, zilch, zero, gratis. From the list below, choose one anti-virus program and one firewall (any more than one of each will cause conflicts and performance issues). Then take any number of privacy and anti-spyware/trojan programs.

Free Anti Virus Software

AVG Free Edition
AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
Avast Home Edition
Bit Defender Free Edition
eTrust Anti-Virus (12 Month Free Trial)

Free Firewall Software

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall.
Zone Alarm
Outpost Free Firewall
Comodo Personal Firewall

Free Anti-Spyware Software

Ad-Aware SE
Spybot Search & Destroy
Windows Defender

Free Anti-Trojan Software

Ewido Anti-Spyware (30 Day Trial of Full Version Reverts to Freeware)
a-squared

Free Spyware Prevention Software

Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
IE Spyad

Kerio and Zone alarm are known to be good and reliable firewalls, not heard much about the others though.

And out of everything else Mark Just listed, here are the ones i personally have installed and use regular:

Ad-Aware SE
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
Ewido
Spyware Blaster

These are all freely available, and easy to configure and install and run, and they dont hog much resources either, so there's no reason not to use them.
